Use a Pressure Washer as a Sewer Jetter

Hydro jetter, water jetter, or sewer jetter – it doesn’t matter what you call it, as long as it clears that pesky blockage. Luckily, calling a contractor to bring and use this powerful machine on a bad obstruction doesn’t have to be necessary. With regular, preventive cleaning, you can prevent huge issues and forget about contractors forever. The best thing is – with a simple attachment, you can turn your own pressure washer into a sewer jetter and clean your own sewer lines and drains without hassle.

How does a sewer jetter work?

The drain cleaner is a sewer jetter that uses the force of pressurized water to pull itself through pipes, scrub the sides of dirty drains, break apart clogs and flush out residue.

Sewer jetters have a long hose with a nozzle that lets out 3 super-pressurized streams of water through your pipes. As you run the hose through your pipes, the powerful water jets blast the walls of the pipe with incredible force, breaking it down and letting the small pieces go away on their own. These powerful streams are what make clearing blockages with a sewer jetter so easy.

How to Unclog a Sewer Drain with Your Pressure Washer?

You can clean clogged drains with your pressure washer using an attachment called a sewer jetter.
A sewer jetter is a long, flexible, high-pressure hose with a jet nozzle on one end. The hoses can typically handle a maximum of 3000 or 4000 PSI.These hoses are typically very light, flexible, resist abrasion well, and tend to be slippery too. The nozzle typically has a front-firing jet to break apart clogs, and back-firing jets that propel the jetter hose forward into dirty drains and scrub the sides of the pipes. Some nozzles are even designed to rotate on their own, and these provide great forward thrust while the rotating action additionally agitates the buildup. The other end of the sewer jetter has a coupling that attaches to the spray wand or trigger gun of your pressure washer.

The key to efficient drain cleaning is to use a sewer jetter attachment with the right combination of nozzle orifice size and configuration, hose diameter, and fittings to match your particular pressure washer, as described in the following sections.

Residential Gas Pressure Washers
The flow rate of a residential gas pressure washer is typically between 2 and 2.9 GPM. This gives you an ideal balance of jetting power and ease of use for cleaning household drains up to 4″ in diameter. The keys to efficient cleaning with a residential gas pressure washer are:

  • A jetter hose with the smallest possible diameter that can handle the intermediate GPM flow rate without overloading your machine.
  • A jet nozzle that’s closely matched to the GPM flow of your machine, with a spray pattern that’s optimized for more thorough cleaning.
  • A coupling end with an adapter that attaches directly to the spray wand or trigger gun of your gas pressure washer so that you can use the trigger as your on-off valve and avoid the cost of an additional valve and fittings.

Commercial Gas Pressure Washers
With typical GPM flow ratings between 3.0 and 4.0 GPM, commercial gas pressure washers can give you strong pulling power for deep penetration into long sewer drains and the flexibility to clean drain pipes of up to 6″ in diameter.
You should choose sewer jetter components that match the higher flows and pressure ratings of your commercial gas pressure washer:

  • A jetter hose with a diameter that’s large enough to handle higher flows without overloading your machine.
  • A jet nozzle with larger orifice openings suited for cleaning a wider range of pipe diameters under higher flow conditions.
  • A coupling end with an adapter that matches your pressure washer trigger gun.

High Pressure sewer cleaning with high flow rates requires reliable and strong hoses. The following line of sewer jetter hoses is Made of industrial high-quality PU material, so the cover layer is lower friction and very easy to slide through tricky corners in the sewer flexibly. It's 3X wear-resistant and oil resistant than PVC hose. Up to 4000 PSI working pressure at 4.5 GPM, 10000 PSI burst pressure. Works great on almost all high-pressure washers and provide a powerful cleaning effect for your indoor outdoor sewer, drain, toilet, sink, and other tubular areas.Temperature ranges between-10℃~80℃,good performance in diverse climates. With a shorter but strengthen head and a flexible hose body, easier to pass through a narrow and curved sewer and scrub the sides of dirty pipes and flush out the blockage in the sewer.

I just purchased the yamatic 100 ft sewer jetter hose and the Electric pressure washer through Amazon. I need a connector to connect the Yamatic hose to the end of the wand of the pressure washer. Can you tell me what kind of connector do I need?

I have a 4" sewer pipe that clogs 3-4 times a year about 4-8 feet from my clean-out and needs about 30 ft to push out to the main. . The clog is mostly toilet paper. What size hose? What size pressure washer, GPM and PSI.
